Waterton National Park: Day 1
The drive to the park was spectacular. Rolling
hills with bales of hay, stukes of straw and poplars in their gold attire.
Cattle grazing and horses standing guard.
Little towns and villages along the Cowboy Trail
come and go.
Beautiful day to travel and the winding hilly road
was no problem for the truck.. like you thought it might be?LOL
Arrived at Waterton and the campground has FULL
services and hardly anyone here! What a bonus. weather started out fantastic...
We took a quick ride up Red Rock Canyon and what
do we see a big black bear munching away on berries. Unfortunately for me I had
the 500 on my camera and that folks is all she wrote. Got an earlobe! But never
fear I did have two other camears ready to go and got four shots off before
some yahoo chased it off by going really fast around us.
Yes that certainly was an impressive display of
stupidity and frankly rude behaviour.
We went to the viewing fields to catch a glimpse
of the elk.. and there was a huge old bull elk right in the middle of the field
bellowing.. and lying down. Wethought he might be injured but about an hour
into his symphony of "oh lonesome me" some ladies came out of the
bush and game on!!!
We stayed away from most everyone we could and
watched with awe as bulls came out of the bush and sniffed the air. The ladies
would follow the bull and really they looked completely unaffected by the drama
going on around them. Several bull elks started bellowing and coming out of the
woods and the dust up began!!!One elk chased away 6... that is correct 6 other
males.. it was fascinating to watch. The victor kept his harmen intact but the
other males kept coming on.. the KING was not about to be dethroned this night.
We watched until far into the night... too daek to
see much by then but we could definitely hear the bugling sounds continue.
